Zambian team pay price for elaborate goal celebration

Labouring under the illusion that they'd just scored a late winner during a recent game against Mozambican opponents Clube Ferroviario, Zambian side K-Stars went all out in their celebrations.

Not content with having a jig and a somersault just outside the Ferroviario penalty box, the K-Stars players decided to prolong the festivities by sprinting right across the whole pitch in order to applaud a group of school kids in the crowd who had been invited along as the club's special guests.

Cape Verde were eliminated after failing to score against Zambia.

The point from a goalless draw at the Estadio de Ebebiyin was not enough to secure Cape Verde a place in the last eight of the African Nations Cup, while 2012 champions Zambia also bowed out.

Had Tunisia beaten the Democratic Republic of Congo in the other Group B decider, Cape Verde would have progressed with their three points from three draws, but it instead finished 1-1 in Bata and DR Congo therefore reached the quarterfinals based on goals scored.

Yannick Bolasie earned the Democratic Republic of Congo a point in their African Nations Cup opener against Zambia.

Zambia were ahead just 62 seconds in through Given Singuluma but Crystal Palace forward Bolasie fired home the equaliser midway through the second half.

The two teams therefore started with a point apiece in a Group B table that also includes Tunisia and Cape Verde.

The early opener came when Rainford Kalaba's cross from the left, aimed at Ronald Kampamba, was only parried to the edge...

African Nations Cup preview Group B: A group of champions

Zambia shocked the continent in 2012 when they claimed top honours at the African Nations' Cup.
Zambia won the African Nations Cup in 2012.

Three former champions -- Zambia (2012), Tunisia (2004) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (1974 and 1968) -- and Cape Verde, the darlings of the last edition of the tournament who reached the quarterfinals in 2013, make up a group that will attract much interest. Although it contains neither outright favourites nor obvious underdogs, the potential for tough tussles should make for exciting clashes.

Projected finish

Tunisia and Cape Verde are ranked third and fourth on the continent...
