Arda Turan flops again in Turkey's heavy defeat to Spain

Turkey's Euro 2016 dream turned into a nightmare following a disappointing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Spain that saw them on the brink of an exit.

Fatih Terim's side became the first team to concede three goals in a game and can count themselves fortunate that Spain didn't rack up a higher score. Alvaro Morata put Spain ahead after 34 minutes and the reigning champions doubled their lead three minutes later when Nolito found the back of the net. Any hopes of a comeback were extinguished when Morata scored his side's third goal just three minutes after the break.

Once again Turkey's star names Hakan Calhanoglu and Arda Turan failed to stamp their authority on the game and the fans let their feelings known by jeering the Barcelona midfielder.

Player ratings (1-10; 10=best; players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating):

GK Volkan Babacan, 6 -- Not at fault for any of the goals and made a number of important saves to help his side avoid an embarrassing defeat.

DF Gokhan Gonul, 3 -- Non-existent in attack and was unable to deal with the threat posed by Spain's left wing.

DF Mehmet Topal, 5 -- A poor game for the Fenerbahce star who was at fault for the second goal. However, Topal is being played out of position making it hard to be too harsh on the 30-year-old.

DF Hakan Balta, 6 -- Another decent display from the experienced defender and was the best on show at the back.

DF Caner Erkin, 4 -- Poor effort from the attacking left-back who made little impact going forward and was caught out of position on numerous occasions.

MF Selcuk Inan, 3 -- Hugely disappointing display from Inan who struggled to maintain possession and failed to apply pressure on Spain's midfield trio, especially after Turkey conceded the first goal. The Galatasaray captain was taken off after 70 minutes by Terim.

MF Ozan Tufan, 5 -- A hard working display from the Fenerbahce midfielder, who was panned for his role in Croatia's goal in the first game, but didn't make much of an impact.

MF Arda Turan, 2 -- Nothing seems to be going right for Arda Turan who put in another shockingly poor performance for the national team. The 29-year-old was easily dispossessed, found it difficult to maintain his balance and on the whole looked like he was lacking match fitness.

MF Oguzhan Ozyakup, 5 -- Another poor midfield showing from the Besiktas playmaker who failed to make any impact in attack. Ozyakup was taken off in place of Olcay Sahan midway through the second half.

MF Hakan Calhanoglu, 4 -- Calhanoglu struggled once again playing in an unfamiliar right wing role and was taken off after just 45 minutes.

FW Burak Yilmaz, 4 -- Burak Yilmaz looked to be lacking match fitness and failed the hold the ball up for his teammates.

Substitutes

MF Nuri Sahin, 6 -- Sahin helped Turkey maintain possession after coming on in the second half and spread the ball well across the field. The Borussia Dortmund midfield is expected to keep his place in the team for Turkey's final game against the Czech Republic.

MF Olcay Sahan, 6 -- Olcay helped put a stop to Spain's dominance of the left wing, however the hard working winger missed Turkey's best chance in the final minutes of the game.

MF Yunus Malli, NA -- Malli came on in place of Inan in the 70th minute.
