Thailand must stand behind Somyot to help War Elephants progress

FAT President Somyot Poompanmoung
Somyot Poompanmuong (in white) was elected as the new FAT president on Thursday.

It has been a good couple of years for Thailand football on the pitch. The Thai Premier League is going from strength to strength. The national team just needs a draw against Iraq on Mar. 24 to move into the last round of qualification for the 2018 World Cup along with eleven other Asian nations. To be one of this delightful dozen would be confirmation of the progress that has been made on the pitch.

Off the pitch. Well, performances there have been much more like Chonburi's 9-0 thrashing at FC...

Thai clubs Muang Thong and Chonburi knocked out of ACL

ESPN FC's Jason Dasey and John Wilkinson review the latest AFC Champions League playoff results.

Thailand will have just one representative in the group stages of the AFC Champions League again this year and the growing gap with their East Asian rivals makes it difficult to imagine more Thai Premier League (TPL) clubs reaching the later stages any time soon.

TPL clubs Muang Thong United and Chonburi's hopes are over after their playoff matches at Shanghai SIPG and FC Tokyo ended in defeat.

Muang Thong at least held on to their dignity as they put up a good fight against the big-spending Chinese...

Singapore and Malaysia stable while Thailand rise in FIFA rankings

Singapore stay at 148th while Malaysia remain at their lowest at 171.

Reigning Suzuki Cup champions Thailand climbed up a spot to 120th in the latest world FIFA rankings.

The Thais, who are on the verge of advancing to the next stage of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, are the highest ranked Southeast Asian nation.

Since a low of 146th in 2013, they have steadily risen up the global list on the back of some impressive international performances.

Philippines are the second highest ASEAN nation at 134th, an improvement of one place, followed by Vietnam at 146.

BEC Tero back in Thai Premier League but more uncertainty for other clubs

Chanathip Songkrasin has gone on loan to Muang Thong from BEC Tero Sasana.

Six weeks behind schedule, the Thai Premier League (TPL) has finally released fixtures for the 2016 season but the identify of participants remains uncertain, though BEC Tero Sasana -- newly stripped of its star players -- have received a second reprieve in the space of a month.

The standout fixture of the first match day is the clash between champions Buriram United and Chonburi FC on Feb. 26, but the meeting of Muang Thong United and BEC Tero on the same weekend holds a different kind of intrigue.

Thailand can learn lessons of U23 failure to defend Suzuki Cup title

Kiatisuk Senamuang has done a brilliant job for Thailand so far but still has much to learn on the international stage.

Thailand went to Qatar and the U23 AFC Championships with high hopes of success but fell at the first hurdle. How the powers that be in Bangkok would define success is an issue up for debate but it is fair to say that it would not have been coming home with only two points from three group games.

But all is not lost with a busy year ahead for Thai football. The team were never likely to finish in the top three in the tournament, ahead of the likes of South Korea and Japan, hosts Qatar and defending...
