Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang edges Yaya Toure as African player of year

ESPN FC's Shaka Hislop delves deeper into the latest transfer rumours.

Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was named African Footballer of the Year over Manchester City's Yaya Toure on Thursday night.

The result ends a streak of four consecutive awards from the Confederation of African Football for the Ivorian Toure, who had won every year since 2011.

Gabon international Aubameyang, who finished second to Toure a year ago, earned 143 points this time, barely edging runner-up Toure's 136 in CAF's rankings.

Nigeria and Ghana advance to CAF group stage in World Cup qualifying

Nigeria advanced to the third round of African qualifying for the 2018 World Cup with a 2-0 win over Swaziland on Tuesday.

After a goalless first leg, the Super Eagles finally found a breakthrough in the 52nd minute when Moses Simon curled in a free kick.

Nigeria allowed the visitors few chances from that point and doubled their advantage with Fefe Ambrose's free kick in the 87th minute.

Phumlani Dlamini was sent off in stoppage time for Swaziland as Nigeria reached the group stage.

Algeria fight back through Islam Slimani brace; Chad shock Egypt

Islam Slimani scored twice in the second half to salvage a 2-2 World Cup qualifying draw for Algeria in Tanzania.

African sides must get through two-legged ties before reaching the group stage and Tanzania, currently ranked 135th in the world, went 2-0 up against the 26th best in FIFA's list with goals from Maguri and Mbwana Samata either side of half-time.

However Sporting Lisbon man Slimani, who starred at the 2014 World Cup, struck twice to give the away side hope.

South Sudan begin first World Cup qualifying campaign with draw

South Sudan earned a draw in their World Cup qualifying debut, holding Mauritania 1-1 on Thursday, a day after the game began and was then abandoned because of heavy rain.

The score was unchanged from when it was stopped after 10 minutes of play on Wednesday at the National Stadium.

Boubacar Bagili had scored in the third minute for Mauritania. Dominic Abui Pretino equalised with South Sudan's first goal in World Cup qualifying, giving the world's newest nation hope ahead of the return leg in Mauritania...

Tanzania player Juma Said gets two-year ban for 'act of indecency'

ESPN FC's Steve Nicol claims that he would not fire Chile and FSV Mainz 05's Gonzalo Jara for his controversial prod on Uruguay's Edinson Cavani.

Tanzania defender Juma Said has been banned from football for two years by the country's Football Federation for what it described as "an act of indecency".

Said, who captains Mbeya City, was found to have poked a finger against the backside of Azam's John Bocco during a match between the two sides last month.

Officials ordered the 31-year-old to pay a fine of $930, and he is also under investigation by Mbeya City.
