Former South Africa captain Neil Tovey suffers heart attack at training session

Neil Tovey captained South Africa to the 1996 African Nations Cup.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has said that former captain Neil Tovey is in critical condition in hospital after having a heart attack on Sunday, his second in two years.

Tovey, who captained the country to victory at the 1996 African Nations Cup, suffered the heart attack at a training session on Sunday, the association said.

The SAFA quoted his brother Mark as saying he had been rushed to hospital and doctors were battling to stabilise him.

Ivory Coast and DR Congo open CAF third-round qualifying with wins

Wilfried Bony and Ivory Coast opened the third-round of CAF qualifying with a victory.

Ivory Coast top Group C in their third-round World Cup qualifying campaign after coming from behind to win 3-1 at home to Mali on Saturday.

Sambou Yatabare gave the visitors the lead after 18 minutes but the hosts hit back with three goals in eight first-half minutes before the break turned the match on its head.

Goals from Aston Villa's record signing Jonathan Kodjia and Gervinho, either side of a Salif Coulibaly own goal, were enough to secure all three points for the Ivory Coast.

FIFA ethics prosecutors want a six-year ban for former South Africa Football Association (SAFA) president Kirsten Nematandani in a long-running case of fixed friendlies played ahead of the 2010 World Cup by the host nation.

FIFA's ethics committee said on Wednesday that investigators also asked for life bans to be imposed on Zimbabwean official Jonathan Musavengana and former Togo coach Bana Tchanile for bribery and corruption.

Three of the five African teams at the 2014 World Cup have been drawn in the same group to qualify for the 2018 edition.

Mohamed Salah scored twice as Egypt booked their place at the African Nations Cup.

Egypt and Senegal qualified for the African Nations Cup thanks to wins against Tanzania and Burundi.
