Ireland to join UK home nations in exploring 2030 World Cup bid

The Republic of Ireland will join England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in exploring a potential bid for the 2030 World Cup.

The English Football Association had already announced plans to assess a bid with Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and Football Association Ireland said in statement released Wednesday that it would join the feasibility study "following recent positive discussions."

England, who hosted the 1966 World Cup, failed in bids to host the event in 2006 and 2018.


Scotland reject Murrayfield move, to continue playing at Hampden Park beyond 2020

Scotland rejected a potential move to Murrayfield Stadium and will continue playing their fixtures at Hampden Park after 2020 following an agreement to buy the stadium, the country's Football Association announced on Tuesday.

The Scottish FA, whose existing contract was due to run out in 2020, had the option of remaining at their spiritual home in Glasgow or lease the Murrayfield facility from Scottish Rugby.

Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours list

LIVERPOOL, England -- Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish will be given a knighthood as part of the Queen's Birthday Honours.

Dalglish, referred to as "King Kenny" on Merseyside, will become Sir Kenny Dalglish in recognition for his contribution to football.

In a successful career that spanned over 20 years, the Scot played for Celtic and Liverpool, where he is regarded by some as the club's greatest ever player. The 67-year-old also remains Scotland's most-capped player with 102 appearances.
