TV crew arrested after filming World Cup sites in Qatar

ESPN FC's Stuart Holden and Shaka Hislop discuss the latest decision made by FIFA that will see the first winter World Cup final set for Dec. 18 in Qatar.

Members of a German television crew were arrested and detained in Qatar while filming construction sites for the 2022 World Cup in the Gulf State, the station's parent company has revealed.

The ARD TV reporters were released from custody after 14 hours and only allowed to leave the country five days after the German embassy intervened following the incident earlier this year, according to ARD-owned WDR and Reporters Without Borders.

However, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy -- the local...

How Michael Laudrup helped Lekhwiya win the Qatar league 'better'

Michael Laudrup took Lekhwiya to the Qatar league title in his first season as manager and wants to add a cup title this year.

It was a goal that Michael Laudrup would have been proud to score. A couple of stepovers and then a delightful curling shot into the top corner.

The great Dane was on the sidelines, fists pumping, as Youssef Msakni got his second and Lekhwiya's third on April 12 in Doha to seal a 3-1 win over Al Ahli and, more importantly, the Qatar Stars League with a game to spare. Just nine months in the managerial job he has delivered the title. He may not hang around to defend it.

FIFA rejects lawmakers' call to re-run Qatar World Cup vote

ESPN FC's Stuart Holden and Shaka Hislop discuss the latest decision made by FIFA that will see the first winter World Cup final set for Dec. 18 in Qatar.

ZURICH -- FIFA has rejected a call by European lawmakers to re-run the vote which chose Qatar as 2022 World Cup hosts.

Responding to a Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe debate on Thursday, FIFA says it has "no legal obligation for FIFA's executive committee to revoke" the decision.

The 47-nation PACE meeting in Strasbourg, France, agreed a re-vote was justified by "illegal payments" linked to Qatari former FIFA power broker Mohamed bin Hammam.

Lawmakers relied on British newspaper The...

Council of Europe to urge FIFA re-vote on World Cup in Qatar

ESPN FC's Stuart Holden and Shaka Hislop discuss the latest decision made by FIFA that will see the first winter World Cup final set for Dec. 18 in Qatar.
The ESPN FC crew don't believe a winter World Cup will be a detriment to the players, but call Qatar's original World Cup plan into question.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said it makes sense to hold the 2022 Qatar World Cup in the winter months, but admitted it will have an impact on European league schedules.
The ESPN FC crew respond to your questions on the Champions League, Europa League and the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

STRASBOURG, France -- European lawmakers are likely to urge FIFA to re-vote on awarding the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe says it will discuss the issue Thursday. FIFA president Sepp Blatter stands for re-election on May 29.

The debate follows a report to the 47-nation Council of Europe in January raising concerns about "illegal payments" to help Qatar secure hosting rights.

The report relied on The Sunday Times evidence of emails sent by former FIFA...
