Sebastian Soria omitted from Qatar squad for AFC Asian Cup

Veteran striker Sebastian Soria, left, has been omitted from the 24-man UAE squad for the AFC Asian Cup.

Veteran striker Sebastian Soria has been omitted from the 23-man Qatar squad for next month's AFC Asian Cup in Australia.

Coach Djamel Belmadi -- a former Algerian midfielder who had a brief stint with Manchester City -- surprised many by excluding the Uruguay-born Lekhwiya striker and former national team captain. Belmadi had excluded the 31-year-old Soria for last month's Gulf Cup as well, which Qatar won by beating Saudi Arabia in the final.

However, it was widely expected that Uruguay-born Soria...

Sepp Blatter rules out FIFA revisiting vote for 2018, 2022 World Cups

Michael Garcia has resigned from the FIFA ethics committee that investigated the bid process to the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

FIFA will not reopen the vote for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, and will publish at least some of the confidential report into the bidding process, president Sepp Blatter said on Friday.

The 78-year-old Blatter, who is seeking a fifth term as president, said the decisions by the FIFA executive committee on Friday will allow the governing body to move on from four years of controversy.

"We have been in a crisis,'' Blatter said. "The crisis has stopped because we again have the unity in our government.''

FIFA agrees to publish Michael Garcia report on 2018, 2022 World Cup bids

FIFA president Sepp Blatter released a statement saying that FIFA will release Michael Garcia's report but that the bid process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups will not be revisited.

FIFA's executive committee has agreed unanimously to publish Michael Garcia's report into World Cup bidding, where legally possible.

Officials at a meeting in Morocco agreed to the proposal without a vote being taken -- but nothing will be published until the ethics committee charges against three FIFA ExCo members have been dealt with.

At that same meeting, FIFA president Sepp Blatter also confirmed that FIFA will not reopen the vote for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

FIFA prepares to decide on Michael Garcia report

ESPN FC's Gab Marcotti and Shaka Hislop weigh in on Michael Garcia's departure from FIFA's ethics committee and FIFA's image going forward.

A possible split between old and new FIFA Executive Committee members has emerged ahead of the vote on Friday on whether the Garcia report into World Cup bidding should be published.

It follows a suggestion by FIFA president Sepp Blatter at the previous ExCo meeting that only those members who were on the committee for the 2010 vote should have a say on the report's publication.

That would rule out more than half the current members and if Blatter tries to resurrect the move at the meeting in Marrakech...

Architects reveal plan for memorial to honour Qatar construction site deaths

There's been plenty of bad news surrounding the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with corruption allegations about Qatar's bid to host the event still making the headlines.

Two architects have announced plans to build a 2022 World Cup memorial in honour of those who lost their lives while working on construction sites in Qatar.

Axel de Stampa and Sylvain Macaux have plans for a tower made of concrete modules, with each one representing a deceased worker.

The duo sketched out their idea on their "1 week 1 project" website and explained the thinking behind the plans.

"The Qatar World Cup Memorial project is a scalable building that raises awareness about the number of...
