Iraq defeat Qatar to qualify for Olympics with last Asian spot

Iraq beat Qatar to the last Olympic qualifying place for Asian nations at the Rio de Janeiro Games after a 2-1 win on Friday in a third-place playoff match at the Asian Under-23 Championship in Doha.

The Iraqis join South Korea and Japan -- who play in Saturday's final -- as Asia's three teams in the 16-nation tournament lineup in Brazil.

Qatar hoped to take the Olympics berth as a key stage in their players' development for the 2022 World Cup they will host, and was just minutes from victory.

The civil case between the Qatari Football Association and former German FA (DFB) president Theo Zwanziger will be held before the Dusseldorf regional court on Feb. 2 after the Gulf State and its FA sued the ex-FIFA Executive Committee member for libel.

Zwanziger, 70, has been critical of the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to the Gulf state, and has repeatedly said that Qatar was "a cancer on world football."

Bayern Munich confirmed a new sponsorship deal with Doha Airport (HIA) on Wednesday amid recent criticism of the German club's links with Qatar.

The Bundesliga champions and Doha Airport signed the deal with the Qatari airport, Bayern announced on Wednesday. HIA is operated by Qatar Airways, which is fully owned by the Qatari government.

Swiss officials probing 133 suspicious financial reports linked to World Cup

Switzerland's attorney general office is reviewing 133 reports of suspicious financial activity in connection to Russia and Qatar's successful bids for to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cup finals.

The number has increased since August, when the office reported it was investigating 103 suspected cases of corruption at FIFA, world football's organising body that is based in Zurich.
