Hartmann brothers ready for Global success with Philippines

In the past decade, football has been gaining a larger following in the Philippines.

Although the majority of Philippines' 100 million citizens are hooked on basketball and boxing, it came as no surprise when football took the country by storm at the turn of the century. Around the same time, Europe-based Filipino players began donning the Azkals' colours.

The 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup was the breakout tournament for Philippines. They made it to the semifinals and were undefeated in the group stages before eventually losing to Indonesia. They upset co-hosts Vietnam in a game referred...

Singapore's Hassan and Izwan the top two goalkeepers in Southeast Asia

Hassan and Izwan are flying the Singapore flag loud and proud with their performances between the sticks. Photo credit: FAS.

They say that a winning team is built on the back of a good goalkeeper. If that is the case, then Singapore should have won a lot more than they have in recent years.

The Lion City has usually had excellent keepers donning the national colours, from David Lee in the 1994 Dream Team to another retired legend in Lionel Lewis, who earned 73 caps in a decade of service. And, of course, the current duo of Izwan Mahbud and Hassan Sunny have created a healthy rivalry for the Lions' starting spot.

Asia improving as Guam, Singapore and Philippines get shock results

Guam coach Gary White, right, has led his team to an unbelievable start in World Cup qualifying, while Singapore coach Bernd Stange shocked everyone with a draw in Japan.

Those nations at the top of Asian football didn't do the reputation of the continent much good at last summer's World Cup. The statistics are seared in the memory of those fans back home who rose early or went to bed very late in 2014: P12 W0 D3 L9 Pts 3. Football hasn't seen statistics as sorry as these since FIFA's biopic "United Passions" took $607 on its first weekend of release in the United States.

Japan were the biggest disappointments, simply because the most had been expected from the...

Tiny Guam shock India to record second successive WC Qualifier win

Omar Abdulrahman scored a late winner for the United Arab Emirates against Timor-Leste in their opening qualifier for the 2018 World Cup.
Guam scored a second successive win in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers defeating visitors India 2-1 on Tuesday.

Guam, Asia's smallest football nation, have sprung yet another surprise in Group D of the AFC World Cup qualifiers by defeating visitors India 2-1 on Tuesday to follow last week's historic 1-0 win against Turkmenistan.

Defenders Brandon McDonald and James Nicklaw scored in the 38th and 62nd minutes respectively for Gary White's side, who now top their group with six points from two games.

Guam -- a United States territory in the north Pacific Ocean --- sit 174th in the FIFA Ranking and have a population...

Back-to-back WC qualifying wins have Azkals believing in coach Dooley

Philippines' mercurial number nine Misagh Bahadoran drove the Azkals to victory against Yemen in Qatar on Tuesday night.

The Philippines sustained their impressive start to the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign with another remarkable victory in the AFC second round.

Aiming to sustain the momentum of last week's 2-1 upset home win against fancied Bahrain, the Azkals defeated Yemen 2-0 at the Suheim Bin Hamad Stadium in Qatar.

Second-half goals from Misagh Bahadoran and Australian-born Iain Ramsay, making only his second international appearance, helped Philippines make it two wins from two for second place in...
