When the Loyola Meralco Sparks announced the signing of former Azkals' boss Simon McMenemy as head coach in August 2014, it was safe to say that much was expected from him.

After all, the last time McMenemy set foot as a coach in Manila was in 2010 after he had guided the Philippines to their first ever semi-final appearance at the AFF Suzuki Cup.

Almost half a decade had passed since that historic run, but McMenemy acknowledges that there was a certain level of expectation as he took up the reins...

After a hiatus of more than half a year, Philippines domestic football returns with a bang as the UFL Cup kicks off on Saturday at the storied Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila.

Twelve teams will compete for the UFL Cup, with the winners earning a playoff spot in the 2017 AFC Cup. Defending champions Kaya FC, league champions Ceres La Salle and perennial contenders Global, Loyola Meralco Sparks and Stallion are among those set to contest the first piece of silverware this year.

Singapore and Malaysia stable while Thailand rise in FIFA rankings

Singapore stay at 148th while Malaysia remain at their lowest at 171.

Reigning Suzuki Cup champions Thailand climbed up a spot to 120th in the latest world FIFA rankings.

The Thais, who are on the verge of advancing to the next stage of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, are the highest ranked Southeast Asian nation.

Since a low of 146th in 2013, they have steadily risen up the global list on the back of some impressive international performances.

Philippines are the second highest ASEAN nation at 134th, an improvement of one place, followed by Vietnam at 146.

Stephan Schrock hopes move from Germany to Manila will help Azkals

Philippines midfielder Stephan Schrock
Stephan Schrock play for Germany national youth teams before making his Azkals' debut in 2011.

More than a few eyebrows were raised earlier this month when it was announced that Philippines' international Stephan Schrock was moving from European football to the Philippines, joining league champions Ceres La Salle FC, on loan from Germany's SpVgg Greuther Fürth.

After all, the 29-year-old Schrock is still at the peak of his footballing career. Heading to Manila -- where playing standards arguably lag behind some Southeast Asian counterparts -- might seem a step backwards for the...

Singapore now 23 places above Malaysia in FIFA world rankings

Despite disappointing World Cup qualifying results, Singapore edged up in the latest FIFA rankings.

The gap between Singapore and Malaysia in the FIFA rankings has increased to 23 spots after both nations moved in opposite directions on the latest list.

Singapore moved up one position to 148th as Malaysia dropped a spot to 171st, their worst ever ranking.

But the most eye-catching move came from Southeast Asia's top rated nation, Thailand, who jumped 12 spots to 121.

Less than two years ago, they were 165th, but the Thais have climbed up on the back of strong results in AFC World Cup qualifying....
