Peru fan implores coach Ricardo Gareca to stay through full page of personal ads

BUENOS AIRES -- An anonymous fan took out a page of personal ads in the Buenos Aires daily Clarin on Tuesday in an unusual appeal for Peru's Argentina-born manager, Ricardo Gareca, to stay in the job.

Gareca, who is currently at home in Argentina on holiday, led Peru to its first World Cup in 36 years at Russia 2018 and is hugely popular in the Andean nation.

However, he has not yet decided whether to remain in charge or seek a new challenge, and the passionate Peru fan took to the small ads in a...

Australia's agony as Socceroos bow out of World Cup; Peru savour parting gift

SOCHI, Russia -- Three quick points on Australia 0-2 Peru in Group C at the World Cup on Tuesday afternoon:

1. Australia's damp squib, Peru's welcome souvenir

There can be no complaints from Australia, who were as competitive as usual here but exited the World Cup after losing 2-0 to a clearly superior Peru side.

In any event they would have exited with a win after Denmark's draw with France, but they have run out bottom of Group D and the final standings look fair. Excellent goals from Andre...

Mbappe seals France progress as enthusiastic Peru show limitations

EKATERINBURG, Russia -- Three thoughts on France's 1-0 win vs. Peru in Group C at the World Cup.

1. France labour but secure knockout-round progress

France joined Russia and Uruguay in securing a place in the World Cup second round, but it took a Kylian Mbappe strike in the first half to seal another unconvincing victory for the 1998 champions.

Mbappe was already his country's youngest-ever player at a major tournament and became its youngest World Cup scorer with his 34th-minute goal, which saw...

Peru's World Cup fans in Russia enjoying the trip of a lifetime

ESPN's Sebastian Salazar revealed how Peru fans are celebrating competing in their first World Cup since 1982.

The World Cup no longer serves as a reference of football's top quality or of cutting edge tactical ideas.

It has lost that position to European club football, which also hands over the players to national teams in a state of near exhaustion after a gruelling club season.

In some ways, then, the World Cup is not what it was. But in one way it is better than ever. More people from more countries are now able to travel to support that team. It is this meeting of the world, this congregation of people...

Peru commentator catches World Cup fever during anthem

Having waited 36 years to do so, Peru gave it everything when it came to bellowing out their national anthem ahead of their World Cup opener against Denmark.

The Mordovia Arena in Saransk echoed to the sound of the Himno Nacional as the Incas linked arms and seized the moment.

Alas, it all proved too much for one elated Peruvian fan in the stands as Latina television commentator Coki Gonzales suffered a bit of a head rush.

Gonzales was seen being instructed to take deep breaths and gulps of water...

Peru's World Cup return will cap Jefferson Farfan's remarkable comeback

The Exploding Heads delve into Group C, where Denmark may have the nicest fans and Didier Deschamps has been touted as the 'French Mourinho'.

Less than two years ago, Jefferson Farfan's career seemed to be finished. The Peru international left the United Arab Emirates in October 2016, having played just 12 matches for Al Jazira during extremely unhappy spell that was interrupted by numerous injuries.

He hadn't featured for the national team for a year at the time, and experienced problems finding a new club at the age of 32. Farfan was forced to train alone for three long months, trying to keep fit and waiting for an unlikely offer.

If...
