Man United move planned before nightclub shooting - Salvador Cabanas

Former Paraguay international Salvador Cabanas said he was close to joining Manchester United eight years ago before becoming involved in a nightclub shooting.

Cabanas survived being shot in the head in Mexico City in January 2010 but was eventually forced to retire four years later.

Paraguay, former Mexico boss Juan Carlos Osorio agree to new deal

Paraguay has hired former Mexico national team coach Juan Carlos Osorio as their new boss, the country's federation announced Monday.

The length of the deal will encompass the 2019 Copa America and the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

A former head of the governing body for football in South America was sentenced to nine years in prison by a U.S. judge on Wednesday for crimes stemming from the bribery scandal that engulfed the sport three years ago, a spokesman for prosecutors said.

Juan Angel Napout, 60, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Pamela Chen in Brooklyn, New York, who also ordered him to pay more than $4.3 million in financial penalties, according to John Marzulli, a spokesman for U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue.

Paraguayan court confirms extradition of ex-CONMEBOL chief Nicolas Leoz

ASUNCION, Paraguay -- A Paraguayan court on Tuesday confirmed the extradition of Nicolas Leoz, the former president of South America's football confederation.

However, his defense attorney said they would appeal the decision at the country's Supreme Court.

The 89-year-old Leoz was charged in a corruption scandal being investigated by the U.S. Justice Department, and has been held under house arrest in Asuncion fighting the extradition order.
