Northern Ireland 'level up' on way to Russia with cool Super Mario video

With a playoff against Switzerland now the only thing standing between them and the 2018 World Cup, Northern Ireland have marked their amazing achievement in fitting fashion.

Taking a hefty slice of inspiration from Nintendo's classic Super Mario franchise, Northern Ireland have produced a brilliant little retro-tinged video showing them "levelling up" by seeing off the likes of the Czech Republic and Azerbaijan in the group stage.

The Green and White Army now face a two-legged confrontation with...

World Cup playoffs: Italy-Sweden top pick, Northern Ireland to spring upset

The group phase of World Cup qualification may be over, but there is still space for four more European teams at next summer's finals in Russia.

Tuesday's playoff draw denied us the prospect of Italy facing Republic of Ireland -- who famously defeated the four-time world champions at the 1994 World Cup and also beat the Azzurri to qualify for the knockout phase of Euro 2016 -- and a "derby" that would have pitted Denmark against Nordic neighbours Sweden.

But the four ties -- each to be played over...

Will Grigg tied with Paul Pogba on UEFA Best Player award shortlist

Will Grigg didn't even kick a ball at Euro 2016.

UEFA have announced their short list for the 2015-16 Best Player in Europe Award, with the final 10 consisting of the names you would expect: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Antoine Griezmann, Gianluigi Buffon, Gareth Bale et al.

The vote was conducted by journalists from all 55 of UEFA's member associations, who were each asked to submit a list of their five best-ranked players in Europe -- the first player receiving five points, the second four points and so on.

UEFA then crunched the numbers...

Antoine Griezmann, Iceland and Wales among the stars of Euro 2016

Congratulations to Portugal, winners of Euro 2016.

ESPN FC had country bloggers covering their team throughout the tournament in France and each have rated their side out of 10, chosen their favourite memory, star man, team of the tournament and predict what's next for their side.

ALBANIA: 7/10

Favourite memory: Hal Robson-Kanu scoring Wales' crucial second against Belgium in their 3-1 win in the quarterfinals. The unattached striker fooled three defenders before clipping a shot...

Ronaldo and Portugal's glory, Iceland and Wales heroes while England flop

ESPN FC had bloggers covering each country at Euro 2016. It was glory for Portugal, who overcame Cristiano Ronaldo's injury to stun France in the final.

Elsewhere, England endured a miserable tournament, limping through the group stages before an abject 2-1 defeat to Iceland in the round of 16 cost Roy Hodgson his job.

Iceland were one of the stories of the competition, though, reaching the quarterfinals before bowing out to the hosts. Similarly, Wales also captured the imagination following their...

Wales' exit ends United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland's Euro 2016 run

Watch how the fan zones in Lisbon, Porto and Cardiff reacted to Portugal's win over Wales.

Wales bowed out of Euro 2016 on Wednesday against Portugal, bringing to an end the involvement of the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. One semifinal and three round-of-16 finishes were what the four countries had to show for their efforts in France over the last month.

Wales

There were some stony faces among Wales' players as they boarded the bus in Lyon after losing to Portugal. Many nursed consoling cans of beer and sorrows were being drowned. Perhaps that was a reflection of the belief...
