U.S. to meet New Zealand in Oct. 11 friendly at RFK Stadium

Our first weekly update of American players abroad includes Lynden Gooch's Premier League debut for Sunderland.

The U.S. will face New Zealand in a friendly on Oct. 11 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., U.S. Soccer announced on Wednesday.

The friendly will serve as a tune-up for the Americans' likely involvement in CONCACAF's final round of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, which begins in November.

Wiser Shane Smeltz in scoring form in second Asian foray in Malaysia

ESPN FC's Jason Dasey and PJ Roberts recap the best of the Malaysia Cup midweek action.

His Malaysian adventure with Kedah FA is barely a month old, but already Shane Smeltz's second foray into Asia has gone a lot smoother than his first. In 2010, he made headlines after returning home from Chinese club Shandong Luneng only five days into a two-year deal.

New Zealand in Confederations Cup after win over Papua New Guinea

Marco Rojas scored the penalty which won the OFC Nations Cup for New Zealand.

New Zealand will play at the Confederations Cup in Russia next year after beating Papua New Guinea on penalties in the final of the OFC Nations Cup.

The game, played in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, finished goalless after 120 minutes but New Zealand won 4-2 on spot kicks.
