The fact that Burgess managed to make the trip at all was impressive.

"We have two huge sporting...

Cristiano Ronaldo's 75th international goal kick-started a romp of New Zealand and sent Portugal to the semifinals.

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia -- Whisper it quietly, but this Confederations Cup might just prove to be exactly the transformative fortnight Portugal had wanted. While there is little gain in getting carried away by a 4-0 win over New Zealand, the European champions are gathering momentum and the identities of two players who made decisive impacts in steering them to the semifinals give cause for optimism.

While Cristiano Ronaldo was named man of the match for the third time in a row -- having started...

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a penalty in the 33rd minute to put Portugal ahead as his side eased through to the semifinals.
Cristiano Ronaldo's 75th international goal kick-started a romp of New Zealand and sent Portugal to the semifinals.

Cristiano Ronaldo said Portugal are "confident" of their chances of reaching the Confederations Cup final after beating New Zealand 4-0 to top Group A on Saturday.

Ronaldo was in the starting lineup despite coach Fernando Santos's suggestions he could rest his superstar, and he delivered Portugal's opening goal from the penalty spot before being substituted in the 67th minute.

Ronaldo's goal was his 75th with Portugal, taking him level with Sandor Kocsis in second on the list of international...
