Oceania confederation backs U.S.-led 2026 World Cup bid

Herculez Gomez delves into the 2026 World Cup hopes of the United States after Bruce Arena's recent comments.

The United States, Canada and Mexico bid to co-host the 2026 World Cup is supported by the OFC, the 11-nation Oceania football confederation.

Oceania says it also agrees the bid should have "an exclusive period of negotiation" with FIFA for the next year.

The 211 FIFA member federations can decide on May 11 to give the North American neighbours a March 2018 deadline without rivals to show their bid is technically sound.

The bid launched this month is currently FIFA's only realistic option for the...

New Zealand advanced to the final stage of World Cup qualifying in the Oceania region by beating Fiji 2-0 Tuesday.

Ryan Thomas scored both goals in the Group A match, the first in the 27th minute and the other in the 68th.

The win leaves New Zealand nine points clear at the top, with New Caledonia and Fiji only having two matches left to play.

New Zealand will face either Tahiti, Papua New Guinea or the Solomon Islands in the final qualifying round in September. The winners will then meet the fifth-place...

'Wenger Out' banner spotted at New Zealand vs. Fiji match in Wellington

On Tuesday, New Zealand squared off against Fiji in their ongoing quest to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

The match took place in Wellington and while the crowd wasn't exactly thronging, it turns out that there was still a disgruntled Arsenal fan in attendance.

Indeed, spotted draped over the perimeter wall behind the goal, hung a forlorn anti-Arsene Wenger banner.

New Zealand need just a point from their final group game against Fiji to book their place in the Oceania World Cup qualifying playoff.

After picking up four points from their games with Solomon Islands in November, the All Whites knew that the same return from this week's double-header against Fiji would give them an unassailable lead at the top of Group A.

A 2-0 away win in Lautoka on Saturday now means they will be through with a draw in the return fixture in Wellington on Tuesday.

Wellington Phoenix demand A-League relook during international breaks

Wellington celebrate Roy Krishna's goal.
The Wellington Phoenix will be without seven players due to the international break when they face the Newcastle Jets.

The Wellington Phoenix have run out of patience with Football Federation Australia (FFA), issuing a vigorous demand for an international window in the A-League.

In a strongly-worded statement, Phoenix general manager David Dome says the integrity of the competition is undermined by the FFA's refusal to budge on the issue.

The problem is highlighted again this Sunday when a Phoenix side missing seven key players -- six All Whites and Fijian Roy Krishna -- host the Newcastle Jets in a key fixture.
