Southern Africa well represented in CHAN quarter finals

Southern Africa has put on a surprisingly good showing at the ongoing 2018 African Nations Championship in Morocco, with all three of their entrants making it through to this weekend's quarter finals.

The competition is open to players who ply their trade in their local leagues, and while the success of Zambia in reaching the knockout stages is perhaps of little surprise, Namibia and perhaps to a lesser extent Angola, have performed above expectations.

All three teams from the region went through...

Zambia draw with Namibia to top Group B

Zambia drew 1-1 with Namibia in Casablanca to top Group B and set up an African Nations Championship meeting with Sudan, while the point sets the Brave Warriors up for a date with hosts Morocco in the next round.

In the group's other fixture, already eliminated duo Uganda and Ivory Coast played out a stodgy 0-0 draw in Marrakech, as both sides ended disappointing campaigns on a limp note.

Surprise pacakge Namibia had left it late before striking in both of their first two fixtures, but here they...

Last-gasp Namibia win sends Uganda out

Namibia again struck at the death as substitute Halleluya Panduleni fired home a stoppage-time winner to beat 10-man Uganda 1-0 and send the Brave Warriors through to the African Nations Championship quarter finals.

Panduleni netted the only goal of the game in the 92nd minute - replicating Namibia's late strike against the Ivory Coast through in their opener - as the minnows secured their place in the quarter finals with a 100 percent record.

By this point, Uganda were already down to 10 men after...

Charles Hambira heads home as Namibia stun Ivory Coast

Namibia began their African Nations Championship campaign with a first competitive victory over the Ivory Coast when Charles Hambira headed home a stoppage-time winner.

Hambira's leap and pinpoint header was the last effort of the game, as the centre-back jumped to meet a Riaan Hanamub free kick to divert the ball past the sprawling Zadi Hortalin Ble in the 92nd minuted.

A draw would have been a fine achievement for a Namibian side competing at the CHAN for the first time, as Ricardo Mannetti's...

This underdog bites, warns Namibia boss Mannetti

Namibia coach Ricardo Mannetti has warned his team's African Nations Championship opponents that his side are 'underdogs with teeth' ahead of their opener against Ivory Coast on Sunday.

The Southern Africans are primed to make their debut in the competition for African players based in the continent's local leagues after overcoming a difficult economic climate and the subsequent suspension of the Namibian Premier League to qualify.

Having been pitched against heavyweight duo Uganda and Zambia, as...
