Jesus Corona's golazo for Porto leads Mexico's contingent in Europe

Jesus Corona
Jesus Corona, center, scored a screamer to lead Mexico's glut of European-based stars at the weekend.

Jesus "Tecatito" Corona scored a golazo, Granada were once again disappointing and Andres Guardado earned a vital assist for PSV Eindhoven. Here's a look back at the Heroes and Villains of the Mexicans in Europe.

Heroes

What a goal from Jesus "Tecatito" Corona! After returning from injury, the 24-year-old immediately made an impact for Porto in Sunday's 1-1 draw with Vitoria Setubal. Corona's incredible volley in the 46th minute was a reminder of the immense talent and potential that the Mexican international has. Although fellow compatriot Miguel Layun didn't have a goal or assist to his name, the right-back put in a solid performance for the Dragons with his numerous crosses. Hector Herrera, who also recently recovered from an injury, was left on the bench.

Nowadays, it's difficult to find many negatives about Andres Guardado. On Saturday, the well-rounded midfielder put in another impressive shift for PSV in the 1-0 win over Vitesse. In the 50th minute of the Eredivisie clash, Guardado provided the assist for Siem de Jong's winning goal. Hector Moreno was just as influential in PSV's backline through his distribution and defensive interceptions.

Regardless of his performance, a start in 2017 is enough to deservedly earn attention for Marco Fabian. After struggling for months to resolve a back injury, the 27-year-old returned to Eintracht Frankfurt's starting XI for the first time since December. Although Fabian couldn't do enough to help secure a win in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Hamburg, the midfielder was still able to have a key role in the build-up of Frankfurt's attacking plays.

Villains

Granada staggered out of Sunday's relegation battle against Sporting Gijon with a 3-1 loss. Following the defeat, El Grana dropped to 19th place in the standings, bringing them one step closer to relegation. Keep in mind, things could have been much (much) worse for Granada if Guillermo Ochoa didn't stop the penalty kick or make his eight saves.

Despite several opportunities in the attack, Bayer Leverkusen found themselves with a narrow 1-0 loss to Hoffenheim on Saturday. Die Werkself, who are now sitting in a disappointing 11th place in the Bundesliga table, are also without a win in their past six games in all competitions. As for star striker Javier Hernandez, the Mexican was given a cameo role in the last 19 minutes of the loss. With limited time, Hernandez finished with only one shot.

It's going to be challenging for Raul Jimenez to regain a key role with Benfica. In Saturday's 0-0 draw with Pacos de Ferreira, the striker was given the last nine minutes of the match to play. In a game in which Benfica desperately needed a goal or a change in the attack, Jimenez wasn't given an opportunity until the very end.

For a third Serie A match in a row, Carlos Salcedo was left on the bench for Fiorentina. On Sunday, the Viola were able to earn a 1-0 victory over Crotone without minutes given to the Mexican defender. After a promising first few months with Fiorentina, Salcedo has struggled to earn a regular starting role in 2017.
