ESPN FC's Stevie Nicol feels Wayne Rooney was quiet in England's 2-0 qualifier victory over Malta.

LONDON -- England caretaker manager Gareth Southgate defended captain Wayne Rooney after Saturday's 2-0 World Cup qualifier win over Malta.

First-half goals from Dele Alli and Daniel Sturridge were enough to earn the three points for Southgate's side, but after the break England's performance dropped significantly, to the extent that some sections of the crowd booed at the final whistle.

Malta boss Pietro Ghedin wants to complete a "dream" hat trick on English soil to turn Gareth Southgate's first match in charge of England into a nightmare.

The Italian was part of the coaching set-up when Italy won against England in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley in 1997 and was assistant to Giovanni Trapattoni when the Azzurri were victorious in an Elland Road friendly in 2002.

Malta's England-born goalkeeper Andrew Hogg says he sympathises with Joe Hart following his sudden exit from Manchester City.

Hogg, 31, was born and lived in Surrey until he was five, when his half-English father relocated the family to the Mediterranean island.
