Spain rally late to salvage draw at England; Italy and Germany goalless

The FC panel discuss whether England's result against Spain finally guarantees Gareth Southgate the England job.

Spain rallied with two late goals to salvage a 2-2 draw with England in a friendly at Wembley on Tuesday.

Adam Lallana opened the scoring for England from the penalty spot, the Liverpool man playing a whipped-in pass to spring Jamie Vardy in Spain's penalty area, and he was taken down by Pepe Reina with the referee pointing immediately to the spot.

Lallana stepped up and calmly fired home past Reina to put England up 1-0. It was the third goal in as many international matches for Lallana, who was...

Slovenia are up to second in World Cup Qualifying European Group F after Benjamin Verbic's delightful finish just after half-time earned them a 1-0 victory in Malta.

Verbic met Jasmin Kurtic's cross from the right with a clever flick in the 47th minute that beat Maltese goalkeeper Andrew Hogg.

The result takes unbeaten Slovenia to eight points from four games, two behind leaders England, who they drew 0-0 with last time out in Ljubljana.

Malta, yet to pick up a point, are bottom of the pool and have...

Lithuania moved up into second place in World Cup qualifying Group F with a 2-0 win over Malta, who had a man sent off in Vilnius.

The hosts were looking to build on their 1-1 draw away to Scotland, while Malta had been beaten by group leaders England at Wembley.

Lithuania had the best of the first half, but were left frustrated by a resolute Malta defence.

However, the visitors were finally undone with 14 minutes left when captain Fedor Cernych headed in after a knockdown from a corner.

Wayne Rooney defended by England boss Gareth Southgate after fans' jeers

LONDON -- England caretaker manager Gareth Southgate defended captain Wayne Rooney after Saturday's 2-0 World Cup qualifier win over Malta.

First-half goals from Dele Alli and Daniel Sturridge were enough to earn the three points for Southgate's side, but after the break England's performance dropped significantly, to the extent that some sections of the crowd booed at the final whistle.

Rooney was singled-out for opprobrium by some of the 81,000 present -- even before the game, his name booed by...

England record unspectacular win over Malta in Gareth Southgate's image

Gareth Southgate opened his tenure with a victory thanks to first half goals from Daniel Sturridge and Dele Alli.

LONDON -- Three quick thoughts from England's 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Malta at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

1. England win in Southgate's unspectacular image

In Gareth Southgate, England have appointed an unspectacular, safe pair of hands for the next four games. The 2-0 win over Malta on Saturday was very much a result in the manager's image.

While it was hardly surprising against a team whose last win came in 2013, England dominated the game throughout, spending much of the 90 minutes...
