Nigeria and Ghana advance to CAF group stage in World Cup qualifying

Nigeria advanced to the third round of African qualifying for the 2018 World Cup with a 2-0 win over Swaziland on Tuesday.

After a goalless first leg, the Super Eagles finally found a breakthrough in the 52nd minute when Moses Simon curled in a free kick.

Nigeria allowed the visitors few chances from that point and doubled their advantage with Fefe Ambrose's free kick in the 87th minute.

Phumlani Dlamini was sent off in stoppage time for Swaziland as Nigeria reached the group stage.

Algeria fight back through Islam Slimani brace; Chad shock Egypt

Islam Slimani spearheaded Algeria's run to the last 16 of the World Cup.

Islam Slimani scored twice in the second half to salvage a 2-2 World Cup qualifying draw for Algeria in Tanzania.

African sides must get through two-legged ties before reaching the group stage and Tanzania, currently ranked 135th in the world, went 2-0 up against the 26th best in FIFA's list with goals from Maguri and Mbwana Samata either side of half-time.

However Sporting Lisbon man Slimani, who starred at the 2014 World Cup, struck twice to give the away side hope.

FC Dallas' Bakary Soumare announces retirement on 30th birthday

Bakary Soumare moved from Montreal to FC Dallas in a midseason trade.

FC Dallas defender Bakary Soumare says he will retire at the end of the season because of recurring injuries.

Soumare annnounced he was ending his career with an Instagram post on Monday, his 30th birthday.

"Recent health setbacks have made this a necessity," he wrote.

Soumare, a former Mali international, played in college at Virginia and was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft. He played with the Chicago Fire until moving to France with Boulogne in 2009.

Nigeria defeat Mexico in Under-17 World Cup to reach final vs. Mali

Nigeria's Osinachi Ebere celebrates as his team returned to the Under-17 World Cup final.

Nigeria continued their fine goal scoring form by beating Mexico 4-2 in the semifinals of the Under-17 World Cup in Chile on Thursday.

The Super Eaglets reached their second straight final after their 2013 triumph, where they will face Mali, who defeated Belgium 3-1 earlier in the day.

Kevin Magana opened the scoring for Mexico in the seventh minute by controlling a loose ball in the box and firing home at the near post.

But Nigeria responded with two goals to take the lead before half-time.
