Premier Futsal's opening night in Bengaluru had been a bit of a damp squib. As the league's MD Dinesh Raj explained on Wednesday, heavy rainfall at the previous venue, Mumbai, delayed the marquee players' arrival in the city, forcing Mumbai Warriors and Bengaluru Royals to take the field without their respective stars, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, on Tuesday.

Wednesday was a different affair, as the two Manchester United titans took to the Koramangala Indoor Stadium court, turned the clock back...

Kerala's Gokulam FC get direct entry into I-League

Kerala fans came in numbers and were at their loudest at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium in Delhi.
Kerala's football fans are renowned for being a loud, passionate bunch

The I-League is set to return to Kerala after a gap of six seasons, as the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has granted direct entry to Gokulam FC for the 2017-18 edition of the league. The last team to have represented Kerala in the I-League were Chirag Kerala (formerly Viva Kerala) who were relegated following a 12th-place finish in the 2011-12 season.

I-League CEO Sunando Dhar confirmed to ESPN that Gokulam will be playing their home matches in Calicut, meaning there will be two venues in...

Postcard from Pyongyang: With Bengaluru FC in North Korea

Most postcards in North Korea contain images of soldiers, missiles, or both
Most postcards in North Korea contain images of soldiers, missiles, or both

Kunaal Majgaonkar is media manager of Bengaluru FC and travelled to North Korea with the team. He wrote this piece exclusively for ESPN.

The visa on my passport was enough to crease the tikka on her forehead. "Duniya South Korea jaati hai, aap ko kya hua ki aap North jaa rahe ho?" (The world heads to South Korea, what's the matter with you, you're heading North?), said the lady at the immigration counter in Mumbai.

As much as I wanted to explain the Asian Football Confederation's zonal grouping...

To win Indian football's hearts and minds, start with shirts

In India, it is the price that determines how much the fan is willing to spend for a 'genuine' article.
In India, it is the price that determines how much the fan is willing to spend for a 'genuine' article.

A couple of weeks ago, the official, authorized Indian football jersey showed up on the internet.

Manufactured by Nike in Indonesia, its colours were described as Blue Lagoon/Team Orange, it was made of lightweight Breathe Fabric, with Dri-FIT Technology and had "stretch rib panels at the sides" for, we were told, mobility. Super.

Social media was far less awed, the most scathing called it a "banyan (men's vest) with an orange border" but most of the anger, it appeared, arose not from the look of...
