ISL vs I-League: Behind culture clash, signs of mutual benefit

This season ISL clubs are moving from being a franchise to a football team

The season that awaits Indian football, with the ISL and the I-League held concurrently, is expected to give the sport a new direction from the jungle of contradictions that AIFF had grown around itself, with two national leagues that looked and felt different. The 2017-18 Indian football season is to be the rumble in the jungle.

The ISL's existence of celebrity-fronted franchises without genuine community engagement required reinvention. Now that the ISL is a four-month-long league featuring ten...

Philippines draw with Nepal, blow chance to make Asian Cup

Coach Thomas Dooley will now have to wait until March to see if Philippines can qualify.

Philippines blew a great chance to seal their place at the 2019 AFC Asian Cup as they laboured to a 0-0 draw in Nepal.

The Azkals will now have to avoid defeat at home to Tajikistan in next March's final Group F fixture after Tajikistan and Yemen also played out a goalless draw. Thomas Dooley's side remain two points clear at the top of the group and favourites to progress to their first-ever Asian Cup finals.

Gone in 13 seconds or less: The fastest international goals

Myanmar's Yan Naing Oo stole all the headlines at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa, as he scored inside 13 seconds of the kick-off to help his team to a 2-2 draw against the hosts India in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. Myanmar didn't let an Indian get a touch of the ball, as left-back Si Thu Aung played left-winger Thein Than Win into space with a one-two, and Than Win's cross was met by a rising Naing Oo, who beat India's Jerry Lalrinzuala to stun the hosts with an early lead.

India had...

Former Chief Election commissioner SY Quraishi has a new mandate following the Supreme Court's order on Friday that stayed the Delhi High Court order on Praful Patel's election as the All India Football Federation president (AIFF). Quraishi will no longer be the administrator for the AIFF, as per the High court order, and his role will now be to draft AIFF's constitution and not to conduct fresh elections. And though it is "a little restricted," Quraishi says he welcomes it.

"My new role is a little...

AIFF elections: SC stays HC order, appoints Bhaskar Ganguly as ombudsman

The Supreme Court has stayed the Delhi High Court order that had put aside Praful Patel's election as the All India Football Federation president and also appointed SY Quraishi, former Chief Election Commissioner, and former India football captain Bhaskar Ganguly as ombudsmen to formulate the AIFF constitution within eight weeks. The case was heard on Friday, though the court's orders became public only on Saturday.

This will effectively allow Praful Patel and the other elected committee members...
