Gyula Grosics dies aged 88

Gyula Grosics (second left) was a member of Hungary's 'Golden Team.'

BUDAPEST -- Gyula Grosics, the goalkeeper of Hungary's "Golden Team" of the 1950s, has died aged 88.

Grosics' death on Friday was announced by his family and the Hungarian Football Federation.

He had suffered three heart attacks and from other illnesses in recent years, and was hospitalised this week after a routine checkup.

Grosics played 86 times for Hungary from 1947 to 1962.

Sandor Egervori leaves Hungary

Hungary manager Sandor Egervori had his offer of resignation accepted after his side's 8-1 loss to Netherlands.

Egervori's men were well placed to qualify for the World Cup play-offs prior to the clash, starting the night in second, but they ended it wounded and in fourth.

A passage to Brazil is now all-but closed off to them and 63-year-old Egervori's offer to step down was accepted by the Hungarian Football Federation.
