George Leekens appointed as new manager of Hungary

George Leekens
George Leekens has taken over the Hungary national team.

Former Belgium and Algeria coach George Leekens was appointed Hungary manager on Monday.

The Hungarian Football Federation gave Leekens a two-year contract to the end of qualifying for the 2020 European Championship, with the option of a six-month extension if the team qualify.

The federation said Leekens will assume his post after Hungary's two friendlies in November, when the team will be led by interim coach Zoltan Szelesi. Former coach Bernd Storck left the job two weeks ago.

Hungary part ways with Bernd Storck after failing to reach World Cup

Bernd Storck
Bernd Storck qualified Hungary to Euro 2016 but not the 2018 World Cup.

The Hungarian Football Federation says Bernd Storck is out as coach of the national team, which he led to the 2016 European Championship, its first appearance there in 44 years.

Despite that high point, Hungary failed to advance to the 2018 World Cup, which included a crushing loss in qualifying to Andorra.

Hungary last participated in the World Cup in 1986 in Mexico.

Storck, from Germany, was also the federation sporting director and took over the top team in July 2015, compiling a record of eight...

It was 11 years ago on a sultry June afternoon, just after a late Tim Cahill double had conjured up Australia's first-ever World Cup victory from nowhere. In the bowels of Kaiserslautern's Fritz-Walter-Stadion, the visiting media contingent was in frenzied overdrive.

Scurrying towards the press conference room where Cahill and Guus Hiddink were about to talk about the Socceroos' 3-1 win against Japan, I bumped into Les Murray who'd just come off the air after hosting the Germany 2006 game for SBS...

Bernd Storck and his players react after Hungary's historic loss to Andorra in a World Cup qualifier.

BUDAPEST, Hungary -- The coach of Hungary is offering free tickets to a pair of World Cup qualifiers to fans who attended the team's 1-0 loss in Andorra last week.

Bernd Storck said on state television on Friday that his proposition was meant to win back support of angry fans after one of Hungary's all-time worst defeats.

After the match, Hungarian fans chanted for players to remove their jerseys because of the embarrassing performance, and they complied.

Andorra's win was their first in a World...
