Guinea must select next coach wisely or miss chance at World Cup berth

Gernot Rohr
Former Niger manager Gernot Rohr is among the five candidates to take over the Guinea national team.

This week, Guinea's football federation published a list of 15 prospective candidates for their vacant national team job in what is becoming more of a frequent, yet still somewhat bizarre ritual, in African football.

This shortlist of 15 had apparently been selected from an even longer list of applicants, claimed to be 43, and on Friday it was reduced even further to five finalists.

For some it would have come as encouragement of the prospect of an intriguing job. Guinea might be among the...

CAF World Cup qualifying: Algeria, Cameroon, Nigeria all drawn together

Nigeria celebrate
Nigeria face a stiff test to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

Three of the five African teams at the 2014 World Cup have been drawn in the same group to qualify for the 2018 edition.

Only one of Algeria, Cameroon and Nigeria will play at the next tournament in Russia after the Confederation of African Football made the draw for five qualifying groups on Friday.

The three traditional powers were grouped with Zambia.

Just the group winners in all of five four-team pools will advance to the 32-team tournament in Russia.

Ivory Coast, who aim to reach their fourth...

Guinea Bissau's historic African Nations Cup qualification campaign

Guinea Bissau will contest the African Nations Cup following a historic qualification campaign.

The influence of Africa on Portuguese football is constantly recalled by the elevated status that Eusebio, Mario Coluna and Matateu enjoy among the country's sporting greats. But Portugal is paying back a rich debt to its former colonies on the continent as the provider of a new generation of players who have taken the tiny Cape Verde Islands to a place at the top table of the African game and now Guinea Bissau to a first-ever African Nations Cup appearance.

Qualification for Djurtus, as...

Nigeria lose to Egypt, fail to qualify for 2017 African Nations Cup

Mohamed Saleh and Egypt have eliminated Stanley Amuzie and Nigeria from next year's African Nations Cup.

Nigeria will not be competing at the 2017 African Nations Cup after losing 1-0 to Egypt on Tuesday.

Ramadan Sobhy took advantage of a missed clearance to put Egypt atop qualifying Group G at Borg El-Arab Stadium, where a longstanding ban on fans attending games in large numbers in Egypt was temporarily lifted.

Nigeria faced a must-win game after Chad withdrew from their group earlier this week. Under CAF's rules, all of Chad's previous results are thrown out, leaving Nigeria with just two points...

Mohamed Salah salvages late draw for Egypt at Nigeria in ANC qualifying

Mohamed Salah scored in stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw for Egypt at Nigeria in a 2017 African Nations Cup qualifier on Friday.

Oghenekaro Etebo had provided Nigeria with the lead on 95 minutes, though Odion Ighalo missed chances to double their advantage.

And Egypt made them pay late on when Etebo played Salah onside to score in the final moments.

Egypt lead Group G by two points midway through the campaign, with Nigeria's chances starting to dim after they already failed to win at Tanzania...
