Romania gained instant revenge on Greece for beating them to World Cup qualification as Ciprian Marica's penalty sealed a 1-0 win.

Marica netted from the spot after 10 minutes to give the visitors a victorious start to their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

The striker was later sent off, but his side held on to defeat the side who beat them in a play-off for a place in Brazil.

Greece reached the last 16 at the World Cup, going out only on penalties to Costa Rica, but they were quickly on the back...

Vasilis Torosidis signs new 3-year deal

Vasilis Torosidis will stay at the Stadio Olimpico for another three years.

ROME -- Roma defender Vasilis Torosidis has signed a new three-year deal with the Serie A club, keeping him at the Stadio Olimpico until 2017.

The 29-year-old Torosidis said Wednesday that "I'm staying at Roma because it's a big club with big targets and I want to win something with this team."

Torosidis, who had one year left on his previous contract, signed from Olympiakos in January 2013.

After a great start to last season, Roma eventually finished second, 17 points behind defending champion...

FIFA bans former Greece coach Santos

Former Chelsea and Monaco manager Claudio Ranieri has been appointed the new manager of Greece.

ZURICH -- FIFA banned former Greece coach Fernando Santos for eight international games on Monday for verbally abusing match officials at the World Cup.

Santos was banished from the dugout after extra time of Greece's second-round match against Costa Rica, which finished 1-1. His team then lost the penalty shootout.

Santos displayed "several acts of unsporting conduct toward the match officials," FIFA said on Monday in a statement.

FIFA said Santos must serve the ban in official competitive matches...
