Great Britain could again take part in the football tournament at the next Olympic Games in 2020, according to British Olympic Association chief executive Bill Sweeney.

Britain made an exception when entering men's and women's teams for the 2012 Olympics in London after having ceased to compete in the tournament after 1974, when rules were changed to allow professionals to take part.

Scottish FA speaks out against FA's idea for Team GB 2016 Olympic sides

The Stuart Pearce-coached Great Britain side made the Olympic quarterfinals in 2012.

The Scottish Football Association (SFA) has followed the Football Association of Wales (FAW) in speaking out against the Football Association's proposal for Great Britain teams at the 2016 Olympics.

The FA had originally ruled out entering male and female Great Britain teams in Rio de Janeiro but has since written to the Scottish, Northern Irish and Welsh associations asking if they would like to take part.

That move caused some anger at the FAW, which fears it may threaten its independent status...
