The Ghana Football Association are hoping they can lure Juventus midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah back to the Black Stars after his three-year absence from the team.

GFA vice-president George Afriyie says the body will use the upcoming holidays to impress upon the player the need to return, and follow that up with a trip to Italy later.

New Asante Kotoko coach Steve Pollack claims his players are still in the title race as the second half of the Ghana Premier League begins this weekend.

Birmingham-born Pollack will take charge of his first league game of the season on Sunday at Tema Youth, armed with a simple yet complicated mandate. The simple bit is that he has to halt Kotoko's recent slide down the league table and get them to finish as high as possible.

The complicated bit relates to just how poorly Kotoko have played recently....

The Black Stars recovered from a goal down to draw 1-1 against Benin in a warm up game and their first international assignment under new boss Kwesi Appiah.

Benin scored first through striker Ogoulola Ibrahim who took advantage of poor judgement from Ghana goalkeeper Richard Ofori to drive home the opener.

They held till the end of the first half when Hearts of Oak's Patrick Razak went down in the box under a challenge before defender Aawal Mohammed converted calmly.

Newcastle signing Christian Atsu has been left out of the Ghana squad for the 2019 Nations Cup qualifier against Ethiopia and friendly games against USA and Mexico because of an injury.
