Argentina, Netherlands, Japan and Ghana in danger of missing World Cup

Alejandro Moreno talks how Brazil and Argentina are looking following the latest round of World Cup qualifiers.

With 12 months to go before we know the 31 teams who will join hosts Russia at the 2018 World Cup, we take a look at some of the major nations and familiar names who appear to have a battle on their hands to make the finals.

Argentina and Chile

Argentina's 3-0 defeat in Brazil last week left them facing a huge crisis in their qualification bid. However, victory at home to Colombia on Tuesday averted this for now, as at least that win left them fifth and that offers a playoff against the winners of...

Egypt and DR Congo continue perfect starts to qualifying campaign

Mohamed Salah put Egypt on course for victory against Ghana.

Mohamed Salah and Abdallah El-Said struck goals in either half as Egypt took control of their World Cup qualifying group with a 2-0 win against Ghana at the Borg El-Arab Stadium in Alexandria.

Gabon's sacking of Jorge Costa is history repeating itself in Africa

Gabon's coach head Jorge Costa makes a point from the sideline during their African Cup of Nations Group A soccer match against Equatorial Guinea in Bata, Equatorial Guinea, Sunday, Jan. 25, 2015.
Gabon sacked Jorge Costa just months before the African Nations Cup, a surprisingly common move from African federations.

The firing of Jorge Costa by Gabon just 70 days before they host the African Nations Cup continues a sorry tale of panicked and knee-jerk decision making by African football federations. Changing the coach so near to a major event is nothing new to the continent. But, sadly, it has rarely produced the desired results and on most occasions achieved little more than highlighting the foolhardiness of trigger-happy officials.

Gabon's new coach will be Jose Antonio Garrido, who does have some insider...

Ivory Coast and DR Congo open CAF third-round qualifying with wins

Wilfried Bony and Ivory Coast opened the third-round of CAF qualifying with a victory.

Ivory Coast top Group C in their third-round World Cup qualifying campaign after coming from behind to win 3-1 at home to Mali on Saturday.

Sambou Yatabare gave the visitors the lead after 18 minutes but the hosts hit back with three goals in eight first-half minutes before the break turned the match on its head.

Goals from Aston Villa's record signing Jonathan Kodjia and Gervinho, either side of a Salif Coulibaly own goal, were enough to secure all three points for the Ivory Coast.

CAF elects Guinea and Ghana officials to FIFA Council

CAF has elected new officials to fill FIFA Council seats.

CAIRO -- African football leaders have elected officials from Guinea and Ghana to fill two new seats on the FIFA Council.

The Confederation of African Football says Almamy Kabele Camara and Kwesi Nyantakyi earned enough votes in a four-candidate contest on Thursday.

They will complete a seven-member African delegation at an Oct. 13-14 meeting of the expanded FIFA Council, chaired by president Gianni Infantino.

The meeting in Zurich should begin talks to expand the 2026 World Cup to 40 teams and...
