Gabon sacked Jorge Costa just months before the African Nations Cup, a surprisingly common move from African federations.

The firing of Jorge Costa by Gabon just 70 days before they host the African Nations Cup continues a sorry tale of panicked and knee-jerk decision making by African football federations. Changing the coach so near to a major event is nothing new to the continent. But, sadly, it has rarely produced the desired results and on most occasions achieved little more than highlighting the foolhardiness of trigger-happy officials.

Mali find late winner; Zimbabwe cruise in Africans Nations Cup qualifying

Mustapha Yatabare scored in the 89th minute to give Mali a 1-0 win at Equatorial Guinea in African Nations Cup qualifying on Monday.

The Group C match appeared headed for a draw until Yatabare sent in a shot from distance with a minute to play.

Mali retook the lead in Group C by a point over Benin.

Zimbabwe took control of Group L with a 4-0 win over Swaziland.

Mohamed Salah salvages late draw for Egypt at Nigeria in ANC qualifying

Mohamed Salah scored in stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw for Egypt at Nigeria in a 2017 African Nations Cup qualifier on Friday.

Oghenekaro Etebo had provided Nigeria with the lead on 95 minutes, though Odion Ighalo missed chances to double their advantage.

And Egypt made them pay late on when Etebo played Salah onside to score in the final moments.

Egypt lead Group G by two points midway through the campaign, with Nigeria's chances starting to dim after they already failed to win at Tanzania...

African World Cup qualifying: DR Congo rally to open campaign with win

DR Congo and Guinea earned crucial away wins in the second round of African qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

All of the African sides must get through a two-legged tie before reaching the group stage.

Firmin Ndombe Mubele scored two late goals to rally DR Congo to a 3-2 win at Burundi.

Crystal Palace's Yannick Bolasie opened the scoring for DR Congo, only for Burundi to equalise through Cedric Amissi, who then put his side ahead in the 83rd minute.

Ghana beat Mauritius and Cameroon win in African Nations Cup qualifiers

Ghana thrashed Mauritius 7-1 in their opening 2017 African Nations Cup qualifier in Accra.

The Group H favourites were ahead after just 10 minutes against Mauritius, who are ranked 176th in the FIFA World Ranking -- some 142 places below their hosts.

Christian Atsu opened the scoring, heading home a Harrison Afful cross for his ninth international goal, and it was 2-0 shortly afterwards when Jordan Ayew was presented with a tap-in by Jeffrey Schlupp.
