Hugo Perez in El Salvador coach role after missing out as player

Hugo Perez starred for the U.S. as a player but could return to his homeland of El Salvador as a coach.

U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame player Hugo Perez, who turned to the USA squad when his native El Salvador passed him up as a player in 1982, could now be taking his coaching career back to his native homeland as the national team coach of La Selecta.

Four years ago, Perez was actually one of two finalists for the position.

"I was ready to do it," Perez said, recalling the process and the multiple interviews for the role. "They chose, at that moment, the coach they thought could best help the team."

Garath McCleary tapped in a rebound in the 72nd minute as Jamaica beat El Salvador 1-0 on Tuesday night to clinch Group B in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

It was McCleary's second goal of the tournament. Jobi McAnuff's shot from distance forced a diving save by Derby Carrillo, but McCleary was left unmarked in front of goal for an easy finish.

Jamaica is unbeaten in seven of its last eight Gold Cup matches and will play Haiti in the quarterfinals.

Cyle Larin goal helps Canada win World Cup qualifier, El Salvador draw

Canada rode goals from MLS players Cyle Larin and Russell Teibert to a first-leg 2-0 win on the road over Dominica in their CONCACAF World Cup qualification opener.

Orlando City rookie Larin started things off at the five-minute mark to get the visitors on the board. Teibert, who plays for the Vancouver Whitecaps, added an insurance goal in the 64th minute.

The team's will meet again for the second leg on June 15 at BMO Field in Toronto.
