Denmark defender Jannik Vestergaard to have Southampton medical -- sources

Southampton are closing in on the signing of Borussia Monchengladbach defender Jannik Vestergaard, sources told ESPN FC.

Several Premier League clubs, including Everton, West Ham United and Watford, have been linked with Vestergaard, but Southampton are set to win the race for his signature, with the towering defender due for a medical on the South Coast on Monday.

Vestergaard was a member of Denmark's World Cup squad but did not feature in the tournament in Russia.

Kasper Schmeichel: 'Strange feeling' to lose after penalty heroics

Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel said it was a "strange feeling" to exit the World Cup after stopping three penalties -- one in extra-time and two in the shootout -- as Croatia progressed to the quarterfinals.

Watched from the stands by his father Peter, Schmeichel denied Luka Modric late in extra-time to push the game to a shootout, where he also stopped shots from Milan Badelj and Josip Pivaric.

Denmark pushed Croatia to the brink as it took a penalty shootout Sunday to separate the two teams in the World Cup last 16, with the Nordic nation succumbing only at the end, 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 tie over 120 minutes. Kasper Schmeichel will go home a hero regardless, saving an extra-time spot kick from Luca Modric, then two in the subsequent shootout to bring his country within an inch of the quarterfinals.
