Egypt withdraws from football at All Africa Games

CAIRO -- The Confederation of African Football says Egypt has withdrawn both its men's and women's football teams from the All Africa Games in Republic of Congo next month.

CAF didn't give a reason for the withdrawal.

The African football body said Wednesday that it offered Egypt's places to the countries it beat out to qualify for the African games: Burundi in the men's and Senegal in the women's. However, both those countries declined to take part because of the short notice to prepare.

Ghana beat Mauritius and Cameroon win in African Nations Cup qualifiers

Ghana thrashed Mauritius 7-1 in their opening 2017 African Nations Cup qualifier in Accra.

The Group H favourites were ahead after just 10 minutes against Mauritius, who are ranked 176th in the FIFA World Ranking -- some 142 places below their hosts.

Christian Atsu opened the scoring, heading home a Harrison Afful cross for his ninth international goal, and it was 2-0 shortly afterwards when Jordan Ayew was presented with a tap-in by Jeffrey Schlupp.

FIFA's Jerome Valcke cancels trip to Canada for Women's World Cup

ZURICH -- FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke has cancelled his trip to Canada for the opening of the Women's World Cup in the wake of an ongoing investigation into soccer corruption.

FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer said Monday that "due to the current situation," Valcke will not attend this weekend's opening game "as previously scheduled."

Fischer said "it is important that he attend to matters at FIFA's headquarters in Zurich."

Congo bus breaks down at African Nations Cup, team stranded

BATA, Equatorial Guinea -- Congo's team bus broke down on the way to the remote town of Ebebiyin on Saturday, the latest problem for the squad at the African Nations Cup.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF), the tournament organisers, confirmed the incident in a brief emailed statement, saying the bus had "a mechanical problem" around 40 kilometers from Ebebiyin.
