Benik Afobe pulls out of African Nations Cup to focus on Bournemouth

Benik Afobe is in his first full season at Bournemouth after leaving Arsenal.

Benik Afobe has rejected the chance to play at the African Nations Cup for DR Congo so he can fight for his long-term future at Bournemouth.

Former England under-21s forward Afobe switched allegiance to the central African country in March, but will now face a longer wait for his senior international debut.

However, his decision did not allow him to be included in the squad that faced Arsenal on Tuesday because he had not received international clearance from DR Congo.

Egypt and DR Congo continue perfect starts to qualifying campaign

Mohamed Salah put Egypt on course for victory against Ghana.

Mohamed Salah and Abdallah El-Said struck goals in either half as Egypt took control of their World Cup qualifying group with a 2-0 win against Ghana at the Borg El-Arab Stadium in Alexandria.

Roma forward Salah converted a 43rd-minute penalty after Harrison Afful had fouled Mahmoud Trezeguet and El-Said fired home on the turn into the bottom corner following a swift counter-attack in the 86th minute.

Ivory Coast and DR Congo open CAF third-round qualifying with wins

Wilfried Bony and Ivory Coast opened the third-round of CAF qualifying with a victory.

Ivory Coast top Group C in their third-round World Cup qualifying campaign after coming from behind to win 3-1 at home to Mali on Saturday.

Sambou Yatabare gave the visitors the lead after 18 minutes but the hosts hit back with three goals in eight first-half minutes before the break turned the match on its head.

Goals from Aston Villa's record signing Jonathan Kodjia and Gervinho, either side of a Salif Coulibaly own goal, were enough to secure all three points for the Ivory Coast.

Three of the five African teams at the 2014 World Cup have been drawn in the same group to qualify for the 2018 edition.

Only one of Algeria, Cameroon and Nigeria will play at the next tournament in Russia after the Confederation of African Football made the draw for five qualifying groups on Friday.
