China head coach Gao Hongbo is looking to the Olympic Games for inspiration as he seeks to prove the national football team are no pushovers when they kick off the final phase of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup against South Korea on Thursday.

The Chinese have a wretched record against the Koreans, having won just once against the nine-time World Cup qualifiers and with that victory coming in the East Asian Championship in Tokyo in 2010 during Gao's previous stint in charge.

Gao Hongbo will lead his side into the World Cup qualifiers.

China national team boss Gao Hongbo has included injured Guangzhou Evergrande defender Feng Xiaoting in his 25-man preliminary squad for next month's 2018 World Cup qualifying matches against South Korea and Iran.

Feng picked up an injury during the national side's training camp in Kunming earlier this month and missed Evergrande's 2-1 defeat against Shanghai Shenghua in the Chinese Super League on Saturday.

The first Manchester derby to be played on foreign soil was called off on Monday afternoon because of concerns over the state of the pitch at Beijing's Bird's Nest Stadium in the International Champions Cup.

Even so, the level of interest reached fever pitch when Man United arrived from Shanghai on Sunday night, with both clubs under new managers.

De Gea has had little time to rest this...

China to host new international tournament to boost national side

Wanda chairman Wang Jianlin confirmed the China Cup plans at the Sofitel Hotel in Beijing on Wednesday.

Chinese real estate, entertainment and sports conglomerate Wanda says it will host an annual "China Cup" tournament, which will begin next year and feature four national teams.

Wanda on Wednesday said it had reached agreement with FIFA, soccer's world governing body, for the China Cup to be an officially recognised tournament -- meaning results would count toward the FIFA World Ranking.

Wanda said it would invite "first-class national teams from Europe and the Americas," so that the Chinese team...
