Austria's Christian Fuchs retires from international football after Euro exit

Austria captain Christian Fuchs has announced his retirement from international football.

Leicester City defender Fuchs, 30, was unable to help Austria reach the knockout stages of Euro 2016.

Austria suffered a disappointing exit, failing to reproduce their impressive qualifying form as they finished bottom of Group F, behind Austria, Iceland and Portugal.

"The match against Iceland was my last one in red-white-red," Fuchs said in a video message posted on his Facebook page.

David Alaba upset by Austria's disappointing Euro 2016 campaign

David Alaba is hoping Austria's "next chapter" will be more successful following a disappointing Euro 2016 campaign that saw them eliminated at the group stage.

A 2-1 defeat against Iceland followed a goalless draw with Portugal and a 2-0 loss to Hungary, leaving Marcel Koller's side bottom of Group F.

Alaba's contribution has been criticised, with Swiss broadsheet Neue Zurcher Zeitung labelling him "overrated" and the Bayern Munich left-back's role in an advanced midfield position has been questioned.

Portugal, Belgium, Iceland, Ireland, Hungary advance; Ibra, Sweden out

Cristiano Ronaldo produced a stunning performance to keep Portugal in Euro 2016 with a 3-3 draw against Hungary in Lyon.

Ronaldo, who made a record 17th European Championship appearance in the match, set up Nani for Portugal's first and then scored twice in the second half to become the first player to score in four different European Championships.

Balazs Dzsudzsak, meanwhile, scored a brace of his own for Hungary, who led three times during the match and clinched top spot in Group F.

Marcel Koller says expectations on Austria were too high after exit

Austria coach Marcel Koller said the nation's expectations might have been "too high" as their Euro 2016 campaign ended without a victory.

Austria finished bottom of Group F, behind Hungary, Iceland and Portugal, after taking just one point from their three games.

They had needed to beat tournament debutants Iceland on Wednesday to make the round of 16 but, despite having the lion's share of both shots and possession, they came away with a 2-1 defeat after a 94th-minute Arnor Traustason goal.
