Australia's W-League footballers pay to play the game they love

Matildas celebrate
The Australian women's football team participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

A report has laid bare the woeful pay and conditions for W-League players as expectations ramp up on Football Federation Australia (FFA) to improve the situation before the new season.

The Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) report, which surveyed almost two-thirds of W-League players last season, suggests players could walk away from the game because of the financial strain.

Nine out of 10 players said they would consider leaving the sport early to pursue more lucrative opportunities.

"After retiring from the Westfield W-League last time I always regretted not finishing up with my home team and where I grew up," explained Burgess.

"I grew up in Campbelltown and have played for Western Sydney teams almost my entire life...

Matildas coach Alen Stajcic
Matildas coach Alen Stajcic guided his side to the quarterfinals of the Olympics in Brazil.

Devastated Matildas coach Alen Stajcic has described his side's Olympics quarterfinal loss to Brazil as one of the most courageous efforts he has seen in Australian sport.

Australia's Rio campaign came to an end on Friday night, snuffed out in a dramatic 7-6 quarterfinal penalty shootout in Belo Horizonte.

Looking to break a 0-0 stalemate after extra time, the Matildas had a chance to seal a semifinal berth when local star Marta missed Brazil's fifth spot kick, only for Katrina Gorry's reply to...
