No excuses for Syd FC says new striker

Sydney FC signing Ranko Despotovic says he has joined a side capable of winning the A-League and is keen to play a big part in that.

The former Serbian international was unveiled as the Sky Blues' latest recruit on Friday with coach Frank Farina set to start him from the bench in Saturday's round-seven clash with Wellington Phoenix.

The 30-year-old Despotovic joined Sydney from J-League club Urawa Red Diamonds earlier this week and said he had fitted into life and training in Sydney better than expected.

"My first impressions of the club are really good. It is fantastic to be here," he said.

"I am hopeful this year we can fight for the championship. It is because of that I am here.

"There are some young players here and some stars, so there are no excuses.

"I am here to prove myself.

"Sydney play a good brand of fighting football. Hopefully I can score some goals and be a part of that."

"I have heard a lot about the A-League and I am sure that I will enjoy it here."

The 186cm Despotovic, who has represented his country four times, including a 0-0 draw with the Socceroos in Melbourne in 2011, is set to add considerable firepower to Sydney FC up front.

Sydney are chasing their third straight win after victories over Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Heart as they find some early-season momentum after a slow first month.

But Farina said he would not rush Despotovic into his starting line-up.

"He won't start. We will make a decision prior to kick off whether he will sit on the bench but there is every chance," Farina said.

"There is no need to rush him at the moment. We want to let him settle in and not to take any risks.

"He looks good, fitness-wise and conditioning-wise. He obviously looks after himself very well.

"He has done everything asked of him in training so far.

"His inclusion helps to freshen up our squad in terms of options up front."
