Sydney FC off to best start in four years

After just one A-League game, notoriously slow starters Sydney FC have already ticked a couple of boxes that have proven elusive for several seasons.

The 2-0 victory over Newcastle at Allianz Stadium on Friday was the club's first opening round win anywhere in four years and their first round one victory at home in four attempts since 2006.

"We were reminded about it this week that Sydney have failed to get off to a good start for quite a while," Farina said.

"At home it hasn't been such a fortress for a number of years."

It was a solid tradesmanlike effort by Sydney, punctuated and embellished by the odd splash of flair from their captain and talisman Alessandro Del Piero.

The famed striker scored one goal and made another and was probably the difference between the two teams.

Sydney still have a number of influential players to come back including Brett Emerton, Terry Antonis, Pascal Bosschaart and Yairo Yau.

Farina said there had been a lot of media negativity about his team's prospects after finishing their pre-season campaign with several losses.

"That's part of the business we're in, you accept it and you deal with it," Farina said.

"Before a ball was even kicked, there was a lot of pressure on us, myself, the team."

Farina was pleased with the first-up performance of his new-look back four, of which Sebastian Ryall was the only survivor from last season's squad.

"We've still got work to do, I thought defensively we were very solid," Farina said.

" I thought (debutant and former Red Star Belgrade centre-back) Nikola (Petkovic) was outstanding tonight, but they were all pretty good.

"It's the first game, there was a bit of nerves a bit of rustiness and just good to get away with three points."

While Del Piero grabbed the headlines, Farina was pleased with the collective effort of his players.

"We've got a lot of players in the side who have genuine quality and if we can work hard and put the foundations there, the platform for that to be expressed, we'll do well," Farina said.

"I thought tonight the work ethic was sensational and if they can give me that every week, commitment-wise and work-wise it will give those players like Alessandro, Nicky Carle and Richard Garcia, (a chance) to shine."
