Police investigate 'shameful' Emiliano Sala online image ahead of Cardiff derby

South Wales police has confirmed they are investigating an image online mocking Emiliano Sala's death.

South Wales police are investigating an image on social media mocking the death of Emiliano Sala.

A boarding pass image appeared on social media on Friday which included Sala's name and the words "Swansea City airlines."

Sala died in a plane crash in January while travelling from Ligue 1 side Nantes to Cardiff City after the two clubs agreed upon a transfer.

A police statement read: "We are aware and have reviewed an image on social media relating to Emiliano Sala and we are investigating in relation to an offence under the Malicious Communications Act.

"We will be working closely with both Swansea City Football Club and Cardiff City Football Club to identify the source."

Swansea condemned the image in a statement: "We are working closely with South Wales Police who will be conducting an investigation to identify the initial source.

"The image is shameful and does not represent this football club or our supporters in any way.

"We have a zero-tolerance policy towards any discriminatory, unacceptable or anti-social behaviour, and this will be enforced rigorously before, during and after Sunday's South Wales derby.

"Any supporters displaying this type of material or behaving in an unacceptable manner will face criminal proceedings.

"The club will be strongly supporting South Wales Police in any public order or hate crime prosecutions surrounding these images and any related incidents during Sunday's fixture at the Liberty Stadium."

Swansea welcome Cardiff to the Liberty Stadium on Sunday.
