Swansea City's Alfie Mawson set to return from injury vs. Brighton

Alfie Mawson is set to make his return from a knee injury in Swansea City's Premier League game at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, the club have announced.

Mawson could give Swansea a boost in their relegation battle as they and Brighton are separated by one point in the table.

The 24-year-old pulled out of the fifth-round FA Cup tie at Sheffield Wednesday just before kickoff because of the injury.

Swansea said that Mawson saw a specialist and underwent an MRI scan on the knee and is set to return to training this week.

England manager Gareth Southgate was at Hillsborough for the FA Cup tie, a goalless draw, with 24-year-old Mawson understood to be the subject of his scouting mission.

He has enhanced his reputation this season, particularly during Swansea's recent revival under Carlos Carvalhal, and has played in 51 consecutive Premier League matches -- currently the most by any player in the competition.

Leon Britton could also feature in Carvalhal's squad for the first time.

The 35-year-old, who spent two games in caretaker charge after Paul Clement's December dismissal, has not played since the home defeat to Leicester City on Oct. 21, but he is nearing full fitness following an injection in his pelvis.

"His return to the fold will be particularly welcome given that fellow midfielders Renato Sanches (hamstring) and Leroy Fer (Achilles) are both on the sidelines," the club said in the statement.
