Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe signs new contract until 2019

Jermain Defoe has signed a new Sunderland contract committing him to the club until 2019.

Defoe, 33, scored 18 goals in all competitions last season as Sunderland avoided relegation and the striker has been rewarded with a new deal.

Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce told the club's official website: "Jermain is one of the greatest goal scorers in the history of the Premier League and is a player that every manager would want to have in their team.

"He proved that beyond doubt last season by scoring 15 league goals, he is in fantastic physical condition and we are very pleased that we have been able to extend his stay with us."

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Defoe joined Sunderland in January 2015 after a stint in Major League Soccer with Toronto FC.
