Sunderland suspend Adam Johnson amid police investigation

Sunderland have suspended midfielder Adam Johnson pending the outcome of a police investigation, the club announced on Monday.

Johnson had been due to travel with the rest of the squad to east Yorkshire on Monday afternoon for Tuesday night's Premier League fixture at Hull.

A club statement said: "Sunderland AFC has confirmed that Adam Johnson has been suspended from the club, pending the outcome of a police investigation. No further comment will be made at the present time."

Johnson, 27, has played for Sunderland since 2012, when he joined from Manchester City. He has scored four goals in 24 Premier League games this season.

He has endeared himself to Black Cats fans with goals in each of the club's three derby victories at Newcastle in as many seasons, including a late winner at St James' Park on Dec. 21 this season.

The winger has made 12 appearances for England, the last in a friendly victory over Italy in August 2012.
