Agent: Mignolet happy at Sunderland

The agent of Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has distanced himself from earlier claims that his client may be forced to leave the club in order to boost his international ambitions.

Simon Mignolet is looking forward to another derby
Simon Mignolet has been in fine form this season

Mignolet, 24, who joined the Black Cats from Sint-Truiden for a fee of £2 million in 2010, has been in stellar form this season.

Already a full Belgium international with 12 caps, Mignolet is currently vying for the position of first choice with Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois - currently on loan at Atletico Madrid.

With previous reports claiming that the player may look to leave Wearside to further his career, Mignolet's agent Guy Vandersmissen has moved to provide clarity on the situation.

When asked if his client was looking to leave the club, Vandersmissen told ESPN: “No not at all. I wanted to express that he is ambitious and he will not agree that he is the second goalkeeper in Belgium. He wants to again become the number one goalkeeper of the Belgian national team, that’s all I wanted to say.

“He was in position of the number one spot, then there came another manager and he started Courtouis in goal because he was playing for a team in Europe.”

Vandersmissen’s statement follows confirmation from Mignolet last week that he was ignoring any speculation regarding his future, after January reports saw him linked with a move to Arsenal.

“I try to say to people who ask me about being linked with other clubs that it goes in one ear and out of the other,” Mignolet told the Sunderland Echo. “That is what you are going to get as a footballer. Sometimes you are a hero and sometimes you are in the eye of a storm - things change quickly.

“The only thing I can do is focus on my own game. All those clubs I am linked with, if I make a mistake on Saturday, I will be un-linked straight away. It will be the exact opposite and that’s why I don’t really get fussed about it.”
