Meyler closes in on Hull move

Sunderland’s David Meyler is edging closer towards completing a permanent move to Hull City following a successful loan spell.

David Meyler is highly-rated by Steve Bruce

The Republic of Ireland international originally joined the club in early November, and has gone on to score three goals in ten games for the Tigers. The move will see him re-united with former Sunderland boss Steve Bruce, who believes the 23-year-old can only get better.

"David gives us energy and drive that complements the good footballers we've got,” Bruce said. “I've said all along that it was imperative that we get our loan players tied up and we're doing our utmost to do that. It's a good sum of money and fair play to the owners again.

“He gives us something that we haven't got since he's come into the team. He can only get better as well. His career has been cut short by a knee injury and he'll get better the more he plays. That athleticism makes him a great competitor."

Signed by Bruce from Cork City for an initial £250,000 in 2008, it is believed Meyler will cost Hull close to £1.5 million. Eager to start a new chapter in his career, the midfielder admitted it was a tough decision to leave Sunderland.

"It's a big decision," he said. "I've loved my time at Sunderland and made some great friends that I'll never forget. But I've been unfortunate where I've had two serious injuries and it's been stop-start for about 18 months now. To have that opportunity to come out on loan and play regular football has been fantastic. Getting three goals as well, that's been great too.

"I've become an Ireland international as well so I want to keep that going. I want to help this team into the Premier League and if it means dropping down a division for now, then that's what I'll do. This side is a terrific side. They're a great bunch and they have what it takes to win promotion."

Meanwhile Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill remained coy on the situation, confirming Hull’s offer as well as a desire to do business of his own in January.

"Hull City have made an offer which we have considered and may even accept and there’s not much more I can tell you on anything else,” he said. “We are going to have to have a look. We would need some reinforcements.”
