Former Atalanta captain and Italy midfielder Cristiano Doni was one of 17 people arrested in connection with a match fixing and betting scandal in Italy on Monday.
Italian police were acting on an investigation by magistrates in the northern city of Cremona and carried out the arrests across the country in an operation called "Last Bet".
A statement revealed that those taken into custody had contacts with criminal groups in Singapore and Eastern Europe and others arrested reportedly include former Inter Milan and Roma player Luigi Sartor, former Serie B player Alessandro Zamperini and active players Carlo Gervasoni of Piacenza and Filippo Carobbio of Spezia.
An investigation earlier this year saw 16 people arrested in June and, in August, Doni was banned from football for three-and-a-half years by the Italian football federation's disciplinary committee despite pleading his innocence.
His club Atalanta - which won promotion to Serie A this season - was given a six-point penalty.
