Montpellier denied, dramatic l'OM win

Cheikh M'Bengue earned Toulouse a 1-1 draw at the Stade de la Mosson to deny Ligue 1 leaders Montpellier a return to winning ways.

Geoffrey Dernis had given MHSC a seventh-minute lead as they looked to get back on track after last weekend's surprise defeat at lowly Valenciennes.

But M'Bengue equalised five minutes before the interval to frustrate the hosts, who could not find a winner in the second half - even after the 87th-minute dismissal of TFC midfielder Franck Tabanou. The result moved Montpellier a point above Paris St Germain ahead of the capital club's clash with champions Lille on Sunday.

Benoit Cheyrou rescued Marseille pride with a winner five minutes into stoppage time as Lorient finished with a 2-1 defeat and nine men.

Substitute Cheyrou headed in from Mathieu Valbuena's free-kick to change the atmosphere inside the Stade Velodrome, where Marseille's struggle to break down a depleted Lorient side had irritated the home crowd.

Earlier Marseille had fallen behind to a strike from Innocent Emeghara, before Valbuena pulled them back level. Lorient had lost defender Lamine Kone and, immediately prior to the winning goal, Alaixys Romao to red cards.

Jimmy Briand and Lisandro Lopez gave Lyon a 2-1 win over Evian in a game that saw both teams finish with 10 men after the late dismissals of Clement Grenier and Fabrice Ehret in separate incidents. Yannick Sagbo had earlier levelled for the visitors.

Second-half substitute Anthony Mounier scored twice to give Nice a precious 2-0 victory over Ligue 1 relegation rivals Valenciennes.

The winger broke the deadlock in the 68th minute and sealed the points in stoppage time as Nice moved to within a point of safety and their opponents dropped into the bottom three. The win moved the hosts level on 17 points with Valenciennes.

Two goals in injury-time made for an exciting finale as St Etienne edged hosts Dijon 2-1 at the Stade Gaston Gerard.

Florent Sinama-Pongolle put the visitors in front with a 16th-minute strike but by the time 90 minutes were up there had been no further goals despite a series of chances for both sides. Max Gradel finally scored a second for St Etienne three minutes into added time, with Eric Bautheac pulling one back for Dijon moments later.

Nancy lifted themselves out of the Ligue 1 relegation zone by a point with a much-needed 2-1 win at Caen.

Lossemy Karaboue gave the visitors an early lead and Salif Sane slotted home a second goal 10 minutes after half-time. Benjamin Nivet quickly pulled one back from the penalty spot but Caen were unable to find an equaliser.

Bruno Grougi's first-half penalty gave Brest a 1-0 win and a valuable three points to carry them above Auxerre in the Ligue 1 survival battle.
