Gers scrape to victory

Kyle Lafferty popped up with a late goal to hand Rangers a controversial 2-1 win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle to tighten their grip on the SPL.

SPL: Aberdeen 1-0 Hibernian (UK/ROI)

Caley cancelled out a Carlos Bocanegra goal when Andrew Shinnie levelled on 67 minutes and he thought he had turned creator for Richie Foran shortly afterwards, but his header was ruled out for offside.

The decision left Caley smarting and their mood was not improved when Lafferty sprinted onto a through ball with eight minutes remaining and stabbed the ball under Ryan Esson.

A Scott Vernon penalty was enough to give ten-man Aberdeen their second victory on the bounce against Hibernian as they won a fiery encounter at a snowy Pittodrie 1-0.

The Dons opened the scoring after 59 minutes when Peter Pawlett was adjudged to have been brought down by Ivan Sproule in the box and Vernon slotted home from the spot. However, the main talking point of the match came after 67 minutes when Pawlett was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Lewis Stevenson, much to the fury of the home support.

Despite their numerical disadvantage the Dons held on for the victory that moves them six points clear of bottom-of-the-table Dunfermline.

Dunfermline continue to struggle and they found Hearts too good as they lost 4-0 at Tynecastle.

Stephen Elliott opened the scoring on two minutes, with Mehdi Taouil doubling the lead before half time. Any thoughts of a Pars comeback were snuffed out when David Templeton netted on 71 minutes and a late goal from Rudi Skacel sealed.

Motherwell's bid to close in on the top two was dealt a blow as Jim Goodwin cancelled out a Michael Higdon strike to earn St Mirren a 1-1 draw.

Paul Dixon popped up with an injury-time goal to earn Dundee United a 1-1 draw at Kilmarnock, who had led since the 51st minute through James Dayton.
