Toon scrap Maiga deal

Newcastle United have pulled out of a £6 million deal to sign Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga following a problem with his medical.

Maiga, 24, flew into England this week to undergo tests ahead of a proposed move St James' Park but there were complications and a row erupted over the player's fitness.

The Mali international produced medical evidence to state that an unspecified injury was not a problem, but Newcastle still decided to pull out of the deal.

"I am disappointed at this turn of events," said the Maiga's agent Karim Aklil. "Modibo is in perfect physical condition, which was confirmed by one of the leading experts in the field.

"I am convinced the future will prove us right and that Modibo will prove he remains one of the best strikers in the Championship of France."

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew will now turn his attention to Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud, who was scouted by the club in midweek, and Paris St Germain's Mevlut Erdinc.

Giroud has scored 12 goals for the Ligue 1 leaders this season.
