Trezeguet closing in on River move

Former World Cup winner David Trezeguet has undergone a medical and is close to securing a move to Argentine side River Plate after leaving UAE side Bani Yas after only two games.

• Trezeguet leaves Bani Yas

Trezeguet, 34, was born in Argentina and played for Platense before moving to Europe as a youngster and revealed that he has always wanted to play for the club who were relegated for the first time in their 110-year-old history earlier this year.

"I want to play for River to fulfil a supporter's dream, that's why I'm here," he said. "The club is going through a difficult period, and this is something that gives me more desire to crown my career here. It would be great. I feel in shape to help the club a lot, and I want to show my qualities in Argentinean football."

River are looking to gain promotion back to the top flight under new coach Matias Almeyda and Trezeguet is excited about the prospect of signing a two-year deal which could be finalised on Monday.

"I am in perfect condition to play. For me this is like fulfilling a life-long dream, I left Argentina very young and I am entering this with great enthusiasm," he told Ole. "I have spoken with Matias [Almeyda] and we had a very productive conversation. He explained to me the club's situation, their objective is clear and so is his. For me all of this represents a great challenge."

The striker, who has played for Monaco, Juventus and Hercules is also happy to be given the challenge of helping River gain promotion.

"I know what River represents, what they are fighting for and what they have to do, they are in a situation that is unheard of. Entering the Monumental will be the greatest feeling. The goal is to put River back in the first division. I had a similar experience at Juventus.

"For my part, I am coming to do the same here - trying to get River back where it belongs, which is in the top division. I can bring experience.''
