Jenas out for six months

Aston Villa midfielder Jermaine Jenas will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on an Achilles injury.

Jenas joined Villa on loan from Tottenham Hotspur on transfer deadline day but he did not make his debut for the club until coming on as a substitute against Norwich at the start of November. He had been struggling with calf and Achilles problems.

Saturday's game against Manchester United was his first start for Villa, but the 28-year-old lasted 63 minutes before being stretchered off with a ruptured Achilles tendon. He will now be out for six months, which means he will not return before the end of the season.

"This is tragic for Jermaine and, of course, we are all deeply disappointed for him," said Villa manager Alex McLeish on the club's official website. "To lose a player of his talent and experience is bad enough but never to have seen him play enough in the Villa shirt for our fans to appreciate the player he is, that's terrible bad luck.

"Obviously, we wish Jermaine as speedy a recovery as possible and a full recovery, too. He has been a great professional to have at the club since he arrived on loan in August."

Jenas, who has 21 England caps, fell out of favour at Spurs towards the end of last season and was looking to resurrect his career at Villa.

Villa will have to continue to pay Jenas' £45,000-per-week wages as part of the terms of their agreement with Spurs, which means he will eventually cost around £1 million for 109 minutes' football.
