Duo dedicate wins to Speed

Cardiff manager Malky Mackay dedicated his side's Carling Cup win over Blackburn to Gary Speed as they reached the semi-finals of the competition for the first time since 1966.

A Kenny Miller strike and a goal credited to Anthony Gerrard condemned the visitors to a 2-0 defeat at Cardiff City Stadium as the Bluebirds lifted the spirits of a nation rocked by the death of Wales manager Speed at the weekend.

Prior to the game tribute was paid to Speed when the stadium, which hosted his last game in charge of Wales, united in a round of applause in recognition of his career before a minute's silence.

Both managers and Football Association of Wales chief executive Jonathan Ford also laid floral tributes on a Welsh flag, and during the game there were chants of ''There's only one Gary Speed''.

Mackay said the result was a fitting tribute.

''I am very proud of the group, and proud of everyone at the football club. It was an emotional evening for everyone at the club and everyone in Wales,'' he said. ''We knew that going out tonight we would have a big attendance and it was a very moving tribute to Gary.

''We wanted to get through just as that little tribute to him to get Wales into the semi-finals of the Carling Cup.''

Meanwhile, Leeds United manager Simon Grayson also dedicated his side's 4-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in the Championship to Speed, saying: "He would have been delighted with that."

Speed began his career at Leeds and the travelling supporters paid their respects to him by singing his name for 11 minutes - 11 being his old shirt number - during the first half. At full-time, Grayson went to the away end and pointed to the sky before leaving the field in tears.

"It's been a difficult couple of days for myself and Gary's family, supporters of Leeds United and supporters in general," Grayson said after the game.

"Gary Speed was a fantastic person and I wanted my players to go out and produce a performance for him tonight. That was right out of the top locker of our performances. It was very poignant that the first goal came right as the 11 minutes of singing ended and was a left-footed shot. Gary Speed scored many goals like that. It's been difficult, but I'm a very proud manager tonight. I'm delighted to have got a result for Gary Speed."
