Bayern suffer shock defeat at Mainz

Bayern Munich failed to reclaim top spot in the Bundesliga after slumping to a 3-2 defeat at Mainz.

Andreas Ivanschitz put Thomas Tuchel's side in front early on but Daniel van Buyten's deflected effort brought Bayern level 11 minutes into the second half.

Marco Caligiuri restored Mainz's lead 10 minutes later before Niko Bungert gave the home side a 3-1 cushion.

Van Buyten's second in the 79th minute set up a grandstand finish but Bayern could not find an equaliser as they suffered their fourth defeat of the Bundesliga season.

Defending champions Borussia Dortmund therefore remain top following their 2-0 defeat of local rivals Schalke. Jurgen Klopp's men have 29 points as do Borussia Monchengladbach, 3-0 winners at Cologne on Friday night.

In Sunday's other game, Werder Bremen bounced back from their 5-0 thrashing at Monchengladbach last weekend with a 2-0 home victory over Stuttgart.

Aaron Hunt opened the scoring in the 57th minute and Naldo made it 2-0 10 minutes later as Bremen collected their third victory in four league games to climb up to fourth.
