American Samoa on track

American Samoa backed up their historic first World Cup qualification win with a 1-1 draw against Cook Islands on Friday.

The No. 212-ranked nation opened the scoring through Shalom Luani, who pounced on a loose ball before finishing past goalkeeper Tony Jamieson. Ramin Ott had opportunities either side of the half-time break saved by Jamieson as American Samoa looked to double their advantage.

Instead, the Cook Islands restored parity courtesy of a Tala Luvu own goal. The defender headed a Paavo Mustonen free kick into his own net.

The draw sets American Samoa up in a crucial match against Samoa on the weekend, after they played out a 1-1 draw with Tonga.

The home side took the lead in Apia thanks to a well-taken Shaun Easthope penalty prior to half time. But Lokoua Taufahema headed in an equaliser for Tonga eight minutes prior to the final whistle after coming on as a substitute one minute earlier.
